Will Tribeca be Home to the Tallest Building in the Western Hemisphere?

Will Tribeca be Home to the Tallest Building in the Western Hemisphere?

By Eric Anderson, CFDC Trustee

While much of Tribeca was rezoned with height limits 28 years ago, the 10 blocks along Greenwich Street and Church Street have no height limits, with current zoning similar to 57th Street’s “Billionaire’s Row.” This zoning allowed the 57-story Jenga tower on Leonard and Church Street to be built and would allow for Vornado’s proposed 90-story tower at Independence Plaza.

These 10 blocks should be rezoned as soon as possible, with height limit restrictions.

Without a rezoning, expect more supertalls. Vornado and its partner on the Penn Station District redevelopment have already proposed moving BMCC from the Tribeca site once. If they succeed on the second try, this could lead to the tallest buildings in the western hemisphere, right here in Tribeca—even taller than One World Trade Center!

Still having trouble visualizing just how tall our skyline could become? Check out this slideshow, featuring some of the tallest buildings in NYC, with the same zoning as parts of Tribeca.
